The Impact of Truth in Oedipus Rex (the King) Essay -- Oedipus the Kin

The Impact of Truth in Oedipus Rex (the King) "Truth has made me strong." This is a quote from Tiresias, one of the characters in Sophocles's tragedy, Oedipus Rex. The quote has different meaning and relevance for each of the different characters, but for the character of Creon, the quote is completely true. By the end of the play, the truth had not only prompted Oedipus to forgive Creon, clearing his name of any previous accusations, but the truth had also made Creon Oedipus's successor. However, Creon was not one to squander the power that he knew can be gained from knowing the truth. He understood its power and importance, and kept it private. For the majority of the play, right up until the very end, Oedipus sees Creon as an enemy. He thinks that Creon, in league with Tiresias, is Laius's murderer and is conspiring to overthrow the king and take the throne for himself, "You the murderer so self-proved, the self-condemned filcher of my thrown..."(29). However, when the truth comes out that Oedipus has married his mother and killed his father, all is forgiven between the king and Creon. Oedipus makes this beautifully clear when he says "God bless you, Creon, bless your path through life, encompass you with surer joys than mine"(78). Having a good and unmarred reputation is a form of power in that people will respect the person, as well as listen to what he or she has to say. If the truth had never come out and Oedipus had never made peace with Creon, Creon's reputation would have been that of a traitor and a murderer. No one would have respected him and he would not have had any practical strength. The power that Creon ended up with is best described in this quote from the Chorus: "Wait! Here comes Creon...... ...ly saw the world. For the first time, he understands his surroundings, and understands the world for what it really was. Even though the truth takes away his family, kingdom, pride and possessions, the truth gives him something he needs more than all of those: understanding. Sophocles shows his brilliance as a playwright by adding intelligent, terrible irony to the end of the play. The irony is that at the monumental change in Oedipus' life, when he can, for the first time, see the world with clarity, he can see nothing at all, for he blinds himself. Oedipus becomes like Tiresias, visually blind, but mentally clear. Perhaps Oedipus unintentionally takes an example from Tiresias, learning that it is far better to live one's life without sight and see the world clearly through the minds eye, than to be able to see, but have ones sight blinded by pride.

Impact Of Satellite TV On Our Culture Essay

1.Satellite TV (Cable TV) channels started its journey in Bangladesh at 1992. Before that, BTV was the dominant medium for about 28 years and had the monopoly power. 2.But since the birth of the satellite channels in our country, it had a detrimental effect on the society. Gradually the Bangladeshi people are losing their Bengali norms and traditions and getting used to the foreign lifestyles. AIM 3.The aim of today’s presentation is to orient the class about the mass eff of satellite TV channels on our culture and how we can overcome this prob. Scope 4.For better understanding and easy assimilation I will discuss the lesson in fol pts: a.Intro b.What is Culture? c.Major influences of satellite TV on the cultural area of Bangladesh d.Some Statistical Data e.Interpretation f.Inference g.Negative impacts of satellite TV h.Conclusion i.Remedies and Measures that can be taken What Is Culture? 5. Every particular society has its own beliefs, ways of life, art etc. This belief, customs and tradition of a society they fol is known as culture. Bangladesh has its own culture and traditions also. The culture of Bangladesh is composite and over the centuries has assimilated influences of Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism, Islam, and Christianity. It is manifested in various forms, including music, dance, and drama, art and craft, folklore and folktale, languages and literature, philosophy and religion, festivals and celebrations, as well as in a distinct cuisine and culinary tradition. Major influences of satellite TV on the cultural area of Bangladesh 6.The influence of technological advment is changing the present world very rapidly. Changes are taking place in all spheres of life and ultimately changing the social and cultural belief systems. Satellite TV, being one of the brainchild of this technological development, is having a definite eff on the social and cultural area of Bangladesh. 7.Labib(2001) suggests an evidence showing the influence on the women and girls in fds such as fashion and clo and fast food consumption. For Bangladesh, the significant cultural shift arises due to impact of regional channels of Satellite TV, particularly Indian channels like ZeeTV, MTV, Star Plus, Sony TV are influencing the cultural sphere of Bangladesh. Through watching these, cultural ties and values are getting threatened, specifically materials that favour divorce as a means to solve family problems or programming that includes obscenity, nudity, arousal of sexual instincts, or pre-marital sexual relations are completely destroying the cultural beliefs and values of Bangladesh. 8.Indian movie world Bollywood has a curse on the culture of Bangladesh. Renowned Bangladeshi auth and columnist Muhammad Zafor Iqbal said in his column – â€Å"Upto some years ago I could boast never having seen a hindi movie,  but now I cannot. I have to travel by bus from Sylhet to Dhaka, and they show these movies where you are a captive audience.† This clearly indicates about the current picture of how Bangladeshi people are obsessed to the Indian culture, and to what extent these foreign elements has occupied our brains. Some Statistical Data 9.A research was carried out on 40 persons in Ctg based on probability sampling on 2011 to understand the influence of satellite TV on cultural changes. 10.Most of the people think cable TV is the prime reason for the exposure to foreign culture as it is the most aval and easy means. Other means aval are internet, newspapers, magazines, social awareness, general increase in the lvl of edn. But they are not considered here. The results of the svy on preference of cable TV channels by the consumers are showed in graphical form as follows: Fig: Preference of Cable Tv Channels among 40 Responders Interpretation 11.From the above bar diagram, we can see that out of 40 persons, the most viewed TV channel is Star Plus, fol by Sony TV and then HBO. All of them are foreign TV channels with no room for our own broadcasting channels. Inference 12.Over the last 10-12 years, due to this easy exposure, there is a significant change in the dimensions of culture. Research also shows that consumers preference towards some of the aspects like fashion awareness, quality preference have increased. On the other hand, bargaining habit, attraction towards traditional songs, reading habit etc has decreased whereas in some aspects there is no change. 13.Svy carr out on other parameters also showed that the changes in the dimensions which most people think that satellite TV has strong influence upon are increase in the fashion awareness, brand preference, following foreign customs, fast food consumption, interest in foreign music/movie, and for the decrease in the social bondage and good personality traits. 14.There is moderate influence upon increase in quality preference, gender balance, and knowledge based society, and decrease in the interest in Bangla movies/music. 15.There is less influence on eating out, children’s participation in decision making, and for the decrease in religious bindings. 16.A general pattern is observed in the result. People of middle/lower middle cl are affected the most rather than upper cl people possly due to their more exposure to other media/latest technology and greater awareness about changing society. Negative Impact Of Satellite 17.Some consumers were asked about the negative impacts of satellite TV on our culture. The respondents were all almost on a common footing and admit that it certainly has some negative impacts like tendency of wearing indecent/short dresses especially by the ladies and the disturbance of study for the children. They also think there is an increase in the social crime and sexual violence. Some think that it has some influence on the attraction towards smoking/drugs by the young people. Conclusion 18.The results of the study shows that over the last 8-10 years, there is clearly a change in our traditional culture and this change is likely to continue. Though all of this change is not due to the effects of satellite TV, this is playing one of the major roles as maximum exposure to the  foreign culture is due to this media. Remedies and Measures that can be taken 19.Business in today’s market is very competitive. To operate profitably in any business, the focus must be customer oriented. Like any other business, cable TV should also provide the customers with the channels they like most and improve the quality of sound and picture. People who provide the cable broadcast have a great resp towards today’s world. Therefore, corrected effort should be made to sensitize the producers and broadcasters for improving the quality of whatever prog they produce. 20.At the same time local channels should be strengthened and should have a better content. This channels should produce and broadcast quality programs that could help to promote Bangladeshi values and traditions and improve the image of Bangladesh at an international level. REFERENCE 21. How to Solve a Rubik Cube

How to solve a Rubik’s cube The purpose of this report is to inform the audience on how to solve a Rubik’s cube in three simple steps. Solving a Rubik’s cube can be difficult; however by solving one layer at a time, and knowing the correct algorithm to use for each desired move, makes solving a Rubik’s cube easier than it looks. Introduction Invented by mechanics in 1974. There are over 43 quintillion possible combinations for solving a Rubik’s cube. That is 43,252,003,274,489,856,000. (information-facts). I am going to teach you how to solve one side of the cube. Which then puts you in position for solving the middle layer of the cube. That lastly enables you to execute the final layer effortlessly. Body I. The first step in solving one side of a Rubik’s cube is done by making a cross with whichever color you choose to start with. Using the algorithm â€Å"F' T L' T'. † (algorithm list) A. After completing the cross, the edge pieces ar e then put into place completing the first layer. Using the algorithm R' B' R B. II. The second step is putting the middle pieces in the correct domicile in order to finalize the middle layer. A. There are two algorithms used depending on if you are moving a piece to the left or right side of the middle layer.T R T' R' T' F' T F† for moving a piece to the left side. And T' L' T L T F T' F' for the right side. III. The third and final step is solving the last layer. Starting out by executing a cross on the top of the cube by performing F R T R' T' F’. A. Then fixing the cross by orienting the pieces in their correct positions. Using R T R' T R T T R'. 1. Followed by positioning the edge pieces in their correct places by doing T R T' L' T R' T' L. a. Leaves you with the final algorithm, which simply rotates the corner pieces that are already in their correct places. By doing an easy out, out, in, in, move R' B' R B, until the cube is complete. Conclusion I went over how to solve a Rubik’s cube step by step, starting out with the first cross and layer, to the middle layer, and the final cross and layer. If anyone would like me to email them my algorithms I would be glad to do that. And I know the process seems a bit confusing so you would like help learning to solve the cube on your own using the algorithms I can also provide some assistance with that as well. I hope this presentation helped you understand how to solve a Rubik’s cube. References A Rubik’s cube has 43,252,003,274,489,856,000 possible combinations. | Information Facts. Promotional Campaign Olympenergy the energy drink Research Proposal

Promotional Campaign Olympenergy the energy drink - Research Proposal Example The health and energy drinks sector is the most promising, profitable and growing segment in the UK (Reuters, 2008). Accordingly Unilever plans to launch its new energy drink during the London 2012 Olympics which would give the brand a good start. This product will be labeled Olympenergy and would be an energy drink, basically a sports drink without artificial sugar. This sport drink would also be beneficial for the older generation as it would reduce muscles and joint aches. It would help the viewers of the Olympics by providing cognitive support. The energy drinks market in the UK has very high potential. This is evident from a report which says that an energy drink with an Asian ant as its principal agent made a successful entry in the UKs stimulant drinks market (Functional Ingredients, 2002). This drink raises the energy level, fights ageing, and enhances sexual vigour apart from fortifying the different systems in the body. Moreover, the energy and sport drink market is thrivin g in the UK with 484 million litres drunk in 2008 (Williams, 2011). Energy drink producers are generally targeting the young and active consumers. The campaign for plan to leverage the maximum promotional benefits is presented below. 2. Marketing strategy The marketing strategy of consumer goods has undergone a change due to internationalization and globalization. Marketing is not just restricted to adjusting the elements of the marketing mix. Today products marketing demands services being extended to the consumers, and services have extended elements of marketing mix. The marketing campaigning would include several tasks such as taking into account the issues of standardization and adaptation. 2.1 Standardization and... Unilever markets its products in all markets including the developed and the developing countries. Standardization means that the same marketing strategy is applied in all markets without considering the local factors. Standardization means identical product lines at identical prices through identical distribution systems with identical promotional programmes. Standardization can bring about significant benefits but this can be feasible if the markets and the consumer behavior are homogenous. Markets are supposed to be homogenized because of advanced technology in communication and information systems but heterogeneous cultures, political systems and economic conditions across borders makes this task difficult. Standardization is a product-oriented approach and not a customer-oriented approach to marketing. Product focus can blind the company to the consumer needs and wants. Standardization ignores the customer needs and the focus is on reducing the product variables. Cultural differ ences and competitor strategy are also important factors in devising the marketing strategy of such products. Thus, local adaptation becomes essential in devising the market plans.

No topics Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

No topics - Essay Example Police crackdowns can target specific crimes, individuals, or geographic areas. They can involve an increased police presence, a commitment to more severe punishment, or other forms of legal sanctions. In Boston, Kennedy reported on how the local authorities would reach out to the gangs and communicate their intention to reduce violence by bringing every available legal tool to bear on them. This process of 'pulling levers' would dramatically increase the cost to a gang for committing acts of violence. Instead of just one member being arrested and prosecuted for a murder, the system would up the enforcement level of probation, outstanding warrants, and illegal street activities on all the gang members. Sherman reported that similar results were shown in regard to a variety of other settings and crimes. Sherman noted that increased enforcement and greater sanctions can reduce crime. However, the strategy needs to be flexible, because as the crackdown continues it may loose its effectiveness. It may be more effective to move geographical locations and targets on an ongoing basis. Reducing crime in New York City is a never-ending task, as officers put pressure on the streets and target selected criminals and criminal activities.
